The Shopify Design Audit: 12 Things to Fix Before Your Next Redesign

Before you spend on a redesign, spend an hour auditing what you already have. Most Shopify stores don’t need a new look — they need the one they have to actually convert. This checklist walks through the twelve places where stores leak revenue, and what to look for before you call an agency.

1. Start with your data, not your opinion

Pull your last 90 days of analytics before touching a single theme. Which pages get traffic but no sales? Where do people drop off? If you can’t answer that, a redesign is guessing in the dark. The fastest wins are almost always on pages that already have an audience — improving what works beats launching what doesn’t.

2. The product page is where conversion lives

Your product page does the heavy lifting, so audit it line by line: is the first image the one shoppers actually need? Is the description scannable, or a wall of text? Is the add-to-cart button impossible to miss on mobile? Are sizes, shipping and returns visible without a treasure hunt? Fixing these is cheaper than any redesign and moves the needle fast.

3. Checkout friction silently kills sales

The average abandoned-checkout rate hovers around seventy percent — and most of it is fixable. Test the checkout on a phone with a fresh card. How many steps? Does it ask for information you don’t need? Are guest users forced to create an account? One extra field or a clunky step can cost you a double-digit slice of revenue.

4. Speed is a conversion feature

Shoppers abandon slow stores. Compress hero images, load below-the-fold images lazily, and cut apps you don’t use — every app adds JavaScript. If your mobile page takes more than three seconds to become interactive, you are paying for it twice: once in sales, once in ad cost, because Google rewards fast pages.

5. Trust is built in the details

Reviews, policy links, a visible returns promise and a real contact route all lower the risk a shopper feels. A store that looks anonymous converts worse than one that looks accountable. Audit whether a first-time visitor can quickly answer: who are you, is this safe, and what happens if it goes wrong?

Where an agency earns its keep

All of this is doable in-house — but it’s easy to miss what you’re too close to see. An experienced team will tell you what’s worth fixing and what to leave alone, and resist the redesign you don’t need. That honest audit is exactly where a good Shopify partner starts.
