Paid social — Meta and TikTok ads — is where your brand gets seen in the feed, not just when someone is already searching. It’s brilliant at generating demand and terrible at being left alone. Here’s what turns paid social from a cost into a revenue driver.
Creative is the campaign
On social, the ad is the media — people scroll past boring in a tenth of a second. The winning difference is creative: real product shots, authentic angles, before-and-after, user content, an offer that’s obvious in the first second. Test several creative variants early; the platforms scale what works and stop showing what doesn’t, but they need good creative to test in the first place.
Retargeting funds the funnel
Cold audiences are expensive and slow. The reliable money is in retargeting the people who already visited your store, added to cart or engaged with your brand — they know you, they just need a nudge. A solid retargeting structure recovers sales and balances the cost of the top-of-funnel. Don’t run cold social without a retargeting partner; you’ll hand the platform money you could keep.
Track properly or don’t bother
Social platforms are famous for overstating results, so your own tracking has to be the source of truth. Connect the ad account to your store so you see real purchases and revenue per campaign, in a way you trust. Decide which outcomes you actually care about — purchases, margin — and optimise the platforms toward those, not toward likes and views.
Budget discipline, not budget dumping
The platforms love it when you scale fast; your profit margin often doesn’t. Increase budgets gradually, watch return on ad spend, and pause what isn’t paying back instead of hoping it turns around. A managed, disciplined account usually outperforms a larger one that nobody is watching.
Make it work together
Paid social performs best when it’s one part of a joined-up store: strong creative, a converting landing page, email and retargeting catching the overflow. On its own it can still sell; used well with everything else, it compounds. That’s the difference between paying for reach and building a channel.
